Nuclear energy plays a significant role in energy production at Axpo. Safety and reliability are of paramount importance there. The nuclear power stations undergo regular technical upgrades. They have to satisfy the most stringent safety requirements and be operable with long-term cost-efficiency.
Nuclear Energy just under 40 percent of the production capacity installed in Swiss nuclear power stations. Therefore, the electricity generated in the country is free of CO₂ and other atmospheric pollutants.
Axpo AG's fleet of nuclear power stations includes its own facility in Beznau, as well as stakes in co-owned nuclear power stations in Gösgen and Leibstadt, as well as purchase rights to output from French nuclear power stations. Axpo AG has managed the Leibstadt nuclear power station since early 2003.On average, nuclear energy accounts for about two-thirds of the total volume of energy sourced by the Axpo group every year. The nuclear power stations deliver base load energy which is continuously available at constant output.
Switzerland currently has a tried and tested mix of environmentally friendly energy sources, made up of water, sun, wind, biomass and nuclear power. This blend of production technologies has a promising future. In addition, measures to promote energy efficiency and renewables are both important and imperative.
